Filing an Insurance Claim?
Six Steps Make it Easy/Stress-Free
Henry D. Young Insurance

Late winter storms across the U.S. have resulted in significant property damage to homes, cars and businesses; however, knowing how the claims process works is an effective way to make the most of your insurance dollar, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

“Those with property damage should contact their insurance company as soon as possible,” said Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson at the I.I.I. “This also pertains to flood losses covered by the National Flood Insurance Program. Let your insurance professional know the extent of the damage and begin documenting the loss with lists and photographs.”

The I.I.I. suggests these six steps when filing a claim:

1. Call your insurance company as soon as possible.

2. Document Your Loss.

3. Keep Receipts for Additional Living Expenses (ALE).

4. Make Temporary Repairs to Prevent Additional Damage.

5. Be Organized.

6. Don’t be the Victim of a Scam.

To help consumers become familiar with the claims process, the I.I.I. has created a podcast, which can be viewed or downloaded from the I.I.I. Video page: Six Steps to Follow When Filing a Claim. It outlines the steps that consumers need to take when filing an insurance claim after a disaster. The podcast is also available on iTunes and can be found by typing, “Insurance Information Institute” into the search field.

The I.I.I. is a nonprofit, communications organization supported by the insurance industry.

Take a Vacation from your Business
by Christine DeGraff

Most of us look forward to those two weeks a year of vacation (if we are lucky, they are in a row and we are going away!), but with it usually comes a lot of stress as well, especially if you own your own business. It is very hard to "leave it behind" and actually relax, but you need that time to unwind, recharge and spend time with your family and friends. Of course, at the same time, you still need to stay in business and you want things to run as smoothly as possible while you are away.

What usually ends up happening nowadays is people end up checking their Blackberry every 1/2 hour, pulling out their laptop and working an hour or two everyday and spend at least an hour a day returning phone calls - now is that really a vacation?? I think not. This year, why not plan ahead and make it a goal to take a real vacation? Here are some steps to take a vacation from your business!

Before you go:

  1. If possible, have someone cover for you.
  2. Let your clients know in advance that you will be going on vacation.
  3. Get as caught up as possible.
  4. Think about the things that must be done (that you would normally do) during the time that you would be gone and figure out a plan to handle them.
  5. Set your vacation "away message" on your email.
  6. Clean your desk!
  7. Leave your work at work!

While you are away:

  1. Turn your Blackberry, cellphone, beeper, etc. OFF!
  2. Forget about work.

When you come back:

  1. Turn off your vacation message.
  2. Return your voice mail back to your normal message.
  3. Check your messages!
  4. Get out that list and jump right in! You should be nice and recharged and ready to go!
