Yoga is more then a physical practice done on a Yoga mat at home or in a studio. Yoga is also about finding ways in your daily life to relax and unwind.

womanDuring the holiday season it is so hard for us to find time for ourselves. With work, shopping, parties, etc. the hours in the day never seem long enough. When creating your “To Do” list this year why not schedule a little time for yourself each day?

Taking even just 10 minutes a day to relax, unwind and spend some time alone is necessary. It really doesn’t matter how much time you take, the important thing to remember is to take some time for you. 

One great way to take time for yourself is to create a special place in your home that you can place a few special things that help you relax. For example, you can place photos, memorabilia from favorite vacations, or candles. I use the window sill behind my kitchen sink so every time I am doing the dishes, which is a lot with two small children, I remind myself to slow down and take a break. 

Another way to relax and bring down the stress level is simple breathing exercises. This can be done in the car on the way home from work, before getting into bed at night, or even at your desk at lunch time. Allow yourself to breathe naturally and just follow the pace of your breath. As you follow your body’s natural rhythm, the thoughts for the day and the “To Do” list will subside for those few moments. Connecting to your breath gives you a great boost of energy and helps you to connect with yourself.

Do something you love everyday. Try to take a walk or bike ride. As the days get a little cooler it is still important to spend a little time outside. You will receive the benefits of exercise, breathing in some fresh air and a little you time. You may choose to read a book or get lost in an old movie. No matter what you decide to do or how you decide to take a pause each day just make sure you commit to yourself.
