Hot Yoga
by Colleen Verton, Pink Lotus Yoga

The most recent addition to the class schedule at Pink Lotus is a Hot Yoga class. Many people have inquired about this class; curious as to what the benefits are to heat and how the class works.

The works is fairly simple. The room is heated to 95 degrees. The class follows a rigorous flow of postures consisting of Sun Salutations and standing postures. Intertwined with the flow is variety of postures held for a period of time, these postures are held from 6-8 breaths to 2-3 minutes. The movement in the room and the heat generated from the participants increases the room to about 100 degrees. Of course, like all Yoga classes, relaxation is practiced at the end.

There are many benefits to the heat are many. One of the purposes of exercise is to detoxify the body through sweat. Making the room hot helps the body achieve the detoxifying effects of sweat quickly. The room provides the heat from the outside in where the body achieves the heat from the inside out. The heat also adds to the flexibility of the muscles. Warm muscles work better and are more flexible providing a greater range of motion in the muscles. People find they are able to deepen their practice when working in the heated environment. Heat also helps the body burn fat more quickly; therefore, trimming fat from the muscles to encourage weight loss, increase metabolism and tone/strengthen muscles.

Heat adds an entirely different element to the practice of Yoga. Yoga is meant to be studied with complete awareness of the body. When practicing in the heat, that awareness is heightened. Concentration on the body and the body’s movement is essential. Being honest with one’s self about where he/she is in his/her own practice is essential to avoid overdoing. It is important for the mind to be completely present and focused.   Yoga is a practice for body and mind.
