One of the most romantic days of the year (Valentine’s Day) has come and gone, and Congratulations – you’re engaged! What did you do after you announced your engagement? Did you….
- Pick a wedding date
- Decide on a wedding budget
- Choose a theme or reception venue
- Choose your bridesmaids
- Schedule an appointment to try on bridal gowns
While you may want to try on bridal gowns first, your first priority should be choosing the wedding date. Almost every decision you make in regards to your wedding will be based upon your chosen wedding date.
When choosing your date, be cognizant of the time of the year (winter weddings are beautiful but remember that weather may be a key factor in determining travel for your guests). Additionally many people believe that if they plan their wedding around a holiday (i.e. Fourth of July or Labor Day) this allows their guests extra time for travel; however, you may want to consider that many of your guests may already have plans for this time period and travel expense during the holidays is normally higher than other times of the year.
Some things you may want to consider:
- Most vendors provide discount pricing for Sunday weddings
- The busiest days for weddings are Friday evenings and Saturdays
- The time of the year
- Travel time for your guests
- Religious significance of the chosen date
You should also allow yourself enough time to plan your dream wedding. Normally nine to twelve months is an acceptable engagement period. Consult with key family members to make sure there are no other important activities planned around the date you have chosen.
So, when choosing your date, think:
Symbolism – the day he proposed; the day you met; the first time you said “I love you”...
Flowers – do you have a favorite flower – when is that flower in season? If you want to use this flower in your bouquet, seasonal flowers are less expensive.
Expense – weddings held in the most popular months will naturally cost more.
Days to Avoid – dates when most people have other interests or concerns (religious holidays, tax time, etc.).
Most importantly, enjoy your engagement and throughout your planning process, always remember to say "I Love You."
