So Much To See - Not Far Away
by Bea Foster, C and Bea Tours & Cruises
Yes, we are so fortunate to live in South Jersey as we can travel less than 2 hours and find so many interesting attractions to visit.
Our mystery day adventure for June was a very interesting and informative bus trip for all those aboard. Our coach took us to our first stop of the day which was the Outstanding Dreams Alpaca Farm in Preston, MD (www.outstandingdreamsfarm.com). Here the owners, Phil and Vickie Liske introduced us to their alpaca herd. What a delight to be up close to these gentle animals as we learned about these animals and their alpaca fiber. Their fiber contains no natural oil such as the lanolin found in sheep’s wool thus the fiber is naturally hypoallergenic. The alpaca’s fleece contains a natural resin which protects the fiber from aging and becoming soiled with a built-in resistance to water, pilling, wrinkling, staining and the fiber does not hold odors. Their fiber comes in 22 natural colors and has a smooth surface reducing the "prickle effect" associated with coarser fibers. After seeing and learning about the alpacas, we visited the gift shop where we were able to feel the softness of the alpaca garments.
Saying farewell to the alpacas, we traveled to Chapels Country Creamery in Easton, MD, (www.chapelscountrycreamery.com), where we were introduced to Holly Foster. Holly and her husband Eric are the owners of this creamery where they have a herd of Jersey and Holstein cows that provide the milk for their farmhouse cheeses. Holly informed the group of their backgrounds and how they started in their family business. They started with the cows and then decided to start with the artisanal cheeses. Artisanal cheeses are personally handmade by the cheese maker from start to finish, in other words their cheeses are not bulk manufactured. We went right into the milking area and learned all about their milking procedure. From the milking area, we viewed the marking of the cheese through the viewing windows. Then, it was onto the small tasting area where we tasted samples of the cheeses that the creamery has to offer. Of course, there were purchases made with many bringing home the cheese that is also used by the famed Chef Wolfgang Puck.
Following the visit to the creamery, we made our way to Trappe, MD, where we had lunch at Mitchum’s Market Café. The café is adjacent to Mitchum’s Steakhouse, (www.mitchumsteakhouse.com), which is only open for the dinner hour. However, following our lunch we were able to enter the restaurant to view the many photographs of Robert Mitchum and memorabilia of his movie career. We learned that he and his wife had raised their three children on a nearby farm.
As you can see, this day trip contained A So Much To See - Not Far Way. What a wonderful life we have to be able to travel and learn about all that is within a 2 hour period away from home.
Traveling gives us the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of all God’s creations!
Travel is the Perfect Freedom that we have all been given in this great country of ours;
